Just remember, I do not recommend anyone try most of what I can tell you about my experiences with one.
I have owned a 2001 model since it was new. I have abused it in every way I can think of; rolled it a number of times, flipped it, jumped it over distances hard to believe, hauled full size ford pick up out of the sand dunes (with the aid of six additional people on top of my quad), used it year round (for all sorts of ranch type tractor work in mountains) until last year when it was time for lots of service such as rebuild carburetor, valve adjustments, flushing coolant, replacing front struts, service front hubs, battery mount modifications (have a warn winch and the stock battery is not cutting it).
I have ridden with literally thousands of other riders on every make and model I could imagine. Most of them were faster however none of them could pull what I could or jump as far as I could (nice soft landing also). We competed for weeks and some very disappointed way beyond stock quads could not even hit half the distance and in those attempts, they were beat up (harsh landings).
What a climber it is also. rack face I would think twice about climbing on foot, straight up! Love the all wheel drive (not four wheel drive, better). The ‘low range’ has pulled trailer loads of slash (limbs from trees) in a pickup bed trailer out of the trees up 18 degree climb, the engine brake is priceless when the load out-ways the quad and rider four to one.
I have owned motorcycles of nearly every brand, street, dirt and induro but only a couple of Honda’s gave me this type of satisfaction.
If you buy it, buy the complete service manual and follow it to the letter.
I would buy another one of them today, nothing else out there has compared so far. That is partially because whenever I buy, it must be able to play and work reliably.
With a dead battery @ 20 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, one pull starts, assuming it is well maintained.
I used mine to teach many kids how to ride. they have crashed it, rolled it, abused it… you get the idea. Teaching them that ‘when it rolls’ to simply step off the high side worked. some of these kids can actually drive very well on ice from what they learned.
highly recommended
